What Drywall Finishing Involves

Drywall finishing is the process that transforms raw, hung drywall into smooth, paint-ready surfaces. It involves three main stages:

  • Taping — Joint tape (paper or mesh) is applied over every seam where two sheets of drywall meet. This reinforces the joint and prevents cracking. Inside corners get folded paper tape, while outside corners get metal or vinyl corner bead for a crisp, durable edge.
  • Mudding (Joint Compound Application) — Multiple coats of joint compound (“mud”) are applied over the tape, screw heads, and corner beads. Each coat is wider than the last to feather the compound smoothly into the surrounding drywall surface.
  • Sanding — Once the final coat is dry, we sand the entire surface smooth. This is where attention to detail really matters — proper sanding eliminates ridges, tool marks, and imperfections that would show through paint.

Drywall Finish Levels Explained (Level 0 Through Level 5)

The drywall industry uses a standardized system of finish levels (0 through 5) to define the quality and completeness of the finishing work. Choosing the right finish level for each area saves money where a perfect finish isn’t needed and ensures a flawless result where it matters most.

Level 0 — No Finishing

Drywall is hung but no taping, mudding, or finishing is applied. Used only in temporary construction or areas that will be completely concealed, like above a dropped ceiling in a commercial space.

Level 1 — Fire Tape

Joints and angles are taped with a single coat of compound, but not sanded or finished beyond that. Used in areas concealed from view where fire and smoke resistance is needed — above ceilings, in mechanical chases, and similar spaces.

Level 2 — Standard Garage Finish

Joints receive tape plus one coat of compound. Screw heads get one coat. Surfaces are not sanded smooth. Suitable for garages, warehouses, and utility areas where appearance isn’t a priority but you want some protection.

Level 3 — Texture-Ready

Joints receive tape plus two coats of compound. All screw heads and accessories get two coats. Light sanding is performed. This level is suitable for walls that will receive heavy texture (knockdown, orange peel, etc.) or heavy wallcoverings that hide minor imperfections.

Level 4 — Standard Paint-Ready

Joints receive tape plus three coats of compound. All screw heads, accessories, and imperfections get three coats and thorough sanding. This is the most common finish level for residential walls and ceilings that will receive flat or eggshell paint. It works well for most rooms in your home.

Level 5 — Premium Smooth Finish

Everything from Level 4 plus a thin skim coat of compound (or specialized finishing material) applied over the entire surface. This creates a perfectly uniform surface with no visible joints, fastener marks, or texture differences. Level 5 is recommended for areas with critical lighting — entryways with side lights, rooms with large windows, anywhere you’re using gloss or semi-gloss paint, and commercial spaces where appearance matters most.

The Dynamic Drywall Finishing Process

  1. Surface Preparation — We inspect all hung drywall for proper fastening, protruding screws, damaged edges, and any issues that need correction before finishing begins.
  2. First Coat (Tape Coat) — We embed tape in joint compound over every seam and apply compound to all screw heads and corner beads. This is the foundation of the entire finish.
  3. Second Coat (Fill Coat) — A wider application of compound over all taped joints, building up the surface and feathering edges. Screw heads and accessories receive their second coat.
  4. Third Coat (Finish Coat) — The final full coat of compound, applied even wider to create a seamless transition. This coat requires the most skill to apply smoothly.
  5. Sanding — Once fully cured, we sand all surfaces to remove any ridges, tool marks, or imperfections. We use proper dust containment to keep your space clean.
  6. Final Inspection — We do a detailed inspection under work lights to catch any imperfections that need touch-up before you prime and paint.

Common Finishing Challenges We Solve

  • Butt joint ridges — Where non-tapered drywall edges meet, creating a visible ridge. We use specialized techniques to flatten and hide these joints.
  • Corner cracking — Caused by settling, vibration, or improper taping. We address the root cause and re-tape with proper technique.
  • Screw pops showing through paint — We reset fasteners and properly coat them so they stay hidden.
  • Texture matching on repairs — When finishing patches or repaired areas, we match the existing wall texture so the repair is invisible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does drywall finishing take?

Each coat of compound needs to dry before the next can be applied — typically 24 hours between coats. A standard Level 4 finish takes about a week from start to paint-ready, including drying time. Level 5 adds an additional day or two.

What finish level do I need for my home?

Most homeowners are well-served by a Level 4 finish throughout their home. Consider Level 5 for living rooms, master bedrooms, and any area where you plan to use gloss paint or where critical lighting (large windows, side lights) will highlight imperfections.

Can you finish drywall that someone else installed?

Yes. We regularly finish drywall that was hung by other contractors or homeowners. We’ll inspect the installation first and address any issues before beginning the finishing process.
